Bringing a U.S. Army Veteran Home — We Are Deeply Honored
When TEAM Aid received a phone call from a distressed woman seeking help, we didn’t yet know the full weight of what she was carrying. Her brother Timothy — a U.S. Army veteran who had proudly served his country for 22 years — had gone to Medellín, Colombia for what was meant to be a relaxing vacation. Instead, a sudden and devastating stroke took his life far from home, despite the best efforts of the doctors who fought to save him.
What followed was every family’s worst nightmare compounded by an impossible logistical burden. The funeral home in Colombia required funds upfront for preparation, paperwork, and transportation before Timothy’s remains could be returned to the United States. His family had no access to his personal accounts, and while Veterans Affairs would cover funeral costs once he was home, getting him home in the first place was a cost the family simply could not absorb on their own. A crowdfunding campaign fell short, and the clock was ticking — the funeral home needed payment before it could release him for the journey home.
That is when TEAM Aid stepped in. We moved quickly, wiring $4,000 to cover the costs — funds that arrived in time to get Timothy on a flight home. Days later, he was laid to rest with the dignity and full military honors he had earned through more than two decades of service, surrounded by family and friends in North Carolina.
His sister, LaToya, later shared what those days had meant to her family:
“Losing Timothy was made even more painful by her family’s circumstances — his 83-year-old mother, still recovering after a hospital stay of her own, was now grieving the second son she had lost, and the youngest of her five children. When a friend referred the family to TEAM Aid, our founder Mohan Nannapaneni called LaToya personally and helped send $4,000 that same week to bring Timothy home. LaToya said her family will always be grateful that TEAM Aid was there for them during one of the most painful experiences of their lives — allowing Timothy to receive the full military honors funeral he deserved.”
For TEAM Aid, moments like this don’t feel like charity. We feel like an honor. Timothy gave over twenty years of his life in service to this country, and we were fortunate to help bring him home to rest among the people who loved him.
